This year has been a long one hasn't it?
We have had a lot of changes, and new opportunities abound! There is a focus on Australian Made products, manufacturing and food production spurred on by the shock of last year's empty shelves - something most of our population had never seen in their lifetime. Older people relived memories of lean times long ago. This makes for a wonderful opportunity to encourage local manufacturing of all types from hard goods to food products. This situation should also have given consumers an opportunity to look at the benefits of local, dependable, high quality supply more closely and take the opportunity to say no to the massive contributions of globalisation on climate change. So many have not considered the overall impacts associated with these governmental initiatives and personal spending habits whilst taking up the pillar and post for climate change. They rally on about the need for change if we are to slow it down, but forget about the emissions impacts from shipping raw materials halfway around the globe, shipping completed products back, then shipping the products to the final consumer in ships burning low quality diesel in the hundreds of thousands of tons per trip. We also need to ask, as consumers, do we want to encourage manufacturing in countries perhaps not as invested in emissions control as Australia? Do we want to provide jobs and quality goods to our own citizens? Opportunities for all of the businesses that support manufacturing from mining to final manufacturing and sales are lost every time foreign goods are purchased. The impact of that is massive - people from all sectors are affected. Think about all of the supplies used by a single business - cleaners, IT, builders, human resources professionals, accountants, vehicles, repairmen, telecommunications, web developers, administration professionals, suppliers of raw materials and parts, freight, business advisors, other manufacturers.........the list is so incredibly long. Moving one business overseas has a massive flow on effect. The current focus on buying Australian needs to be encouraged and should receive support from the government.....ah, we can only dream..... But we are optimistic! Change is in the air, and consumers are beginning to demand better even on a smaller domestic scale. Calls are being made for Woolie and Coles to have Australian Made aisles. Facebook groups catering to those interested in buying Australian are running strongly, and it seems small businesses are in the spotlight. Let's work to make this a focus of our own consumerism and hold our policitians to the same standards. Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
